Vinyl And Fiberglass Compared

Posted on

Residential fencing can be a major decision because it affects the overall style of your property. That is, you want to install a fence that matches with your home, but is also durable and practical to own. When it comes to low maintenance, affordability, and practicality, vinyl and fiberglass are two of the most popular fencing choices. These two materials are very similar, but they do have a few differences that you need to know about. This article explains the main differences between vinyl and fiberglass. Even though they are similar, knowing what you are investing in beforehand can definitely help you make a more informed decision on your next home renovation project.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass is one of the most popular low-budget fencing materials. Most fiberglass fences are modular, pre-fabricated, and hollow. This enables the pieces to be put together quite easily, making them one of the most affordable options on the market. The main drawback to fiberglass fences is that they look shiny and kind of like plastic. The hollow tubing construction is usually rounded, and the high sheen isn't particularly well liked by some. That is, it just doesn't look very authentic or natural, like wood. But while many people prefer the look of wood, they don't want to deal with the maintenance.

Vinyl

If you want something that looks a little more natural, vinyl might be a better option. Vinyl, unlike fiberglass, can be found in solid construction. This means that the pieces pretty much look and feel like real wood. They are similar in weight and density. Vinyl also comes in much more subtle tones and textures. This not only makes it look more natural, but it also means that vinyl is much easier to repaint. The high gloss of a fiberglass paint is going to be very difficult to change or update. But vinyl can be painted using traditional latex-based paint. Ultimately, homeowners are able to have a little more freedom when it comes to choosing a vinyl product. That being said, it is usually going to be a little more expensive. Also, since it is a little heavier, vinyl fences may not be practical for every fence size.

In the end, if you are just going to install a white fence, both vinyl and fiberglass can be great choices. However, if you want something that looks a little more rustic, you will probably be able to find a more stylish vinyl product with a manufactured finished.
